Natural Pain Management

When you are experiencing pain, there is an imbalance in the body’s energy system. Acupuncture encourages the body to promote its own natural healing and to improve overall functioning.

How Can Acupuncture Work For Pain Management?

Acupuncture has been used as an effective way of relieving pain for thousands of years. By inserting the needles into specific points on the body, acupuncture stimulates the body to produce natural steroids and release endorphins. Steroids decrease inflammation, and endorphins inhibit pain. Chronic conditions benefits from the control of pain and inflammation, enhanced circulation, and the reduction of stress.

Dr. Yin’s patients in Frisco enjoy acupuncture because it is a safe and effective option for those who do not want to have surgery or side effects with many drug treatments, such as anti-inflammatory medication and steroid injections. Acupuncture usually treats the causes and helps relieve pain.

How Does Pain Work?

Any pain detected by the body is sent to the brain through the nociceptors, otherwise known as sensory nerves. Each sensory nerve registers various feelings of pain, ranging from burning, sharp pain to dull and throbbing pain. The proprioceptive nerves then tell the brain-specific areas of the body where the pain originates from. Physical injury, on the other hand, is handled in two different stages. First, the body protects the injured area and then defends itself against any possible harm. The brain further generates a defensive reflex on the muscles located around the injury, making it harder to prevent you from possibly re-injuring it. Blood flow to that location is restricted by the brain to prevent any infections from reaching other parts of the body. The second stage begins only after inflammation has reduced.

Chemicals aimed at blocking pain are sent to the affected area. The brain then relaxes blood vessels around the affected area to increase the blood flow. The energy then circulates through the entire body, moving through the injured area to regain its original state. In some cases, energy blocks may develop in the meridians in your body. These energy balls lead to an imbalance that causes an outburst of physical symptoms. Needles can be inserted into particular points on the meridian to stimulate energy, break the blocks or alternatively adjust the flow of energy.

Acupuncture and Pain Management

Acupuncture can be conducted in various parts of the body. However, the best points to use for healing are located on the legs and arms. These nerves, otherwise known as nerve nodes on the legs and arms, are part of the peripheral nervous system. When an acupuncture needle “enters” your body, it stimulates nerve nodes that regenerate the proprioceptive nerve routes.

A piercing of the needle stimulates the brain to release encephalin and endorphin painkillers, as well as bring back blood flow and motion to the affected areas. Shortly after acupuncture, proprioceptive signals begin to weaken. The brain is then stimulated to activate the order of psychological reactions that subsequently heal the affected area.

Effects of Acupuncture on Pain Levels

Researchers have gone the extra mile to retrieve raw data on self-reported pain. Standardizing the different study participants’ reactions, this, in turn, enabled researchers to assess and compare their results as a whole. The team of researchers found clear yet robust effects of acupuncture in treating neck pain, back pain, headaches, back pain, and osteoarthritis.

On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the highest), subjects that registered a pain level of six experienced an average drop of 50% in response to traditional acupuncture treatment practices. A drop of 25% for those that received sham acupuncture and as little as 17% drop for those that received standard pain care treatment without acupuncture.
