How Does Pain Work?

Any pain detected by the body is sent to the brain through the nociceptors, or otherwise known as sensory nerves. Each sensory nerve registers various feelings of pain, ranging from burning, sharp pain, to dull, and throbbing pain. The proprioceptive nerves then tell the brain specific areas of the body where the pain originates from. Physical injury, on the other hand, is handled in two different stages. First, the body protects the injured area and then defends itself against any possible harm. The brain further generates a defensive reflex on the muscles located around the injury, making it harder to prevent you from possibly re-injuring it. Blood flow to that location is restricted by the brain to prevent any infections from reaching other parts of the body. The second stage begins only after inflammation has reduced.

Chemicals aimed at blocking pain are sent to the affected area. The brain then relaxes blood vessels around the affected area to increase the blood flow. Energy then circulates through the entire body, moving through the injured area to regain its original state. In some cases, energy blocks may develop in the meridians in your body.
