Can Acupuncture Help with Weight Loss?

Can acupuncture help with weight loss? There’s no helping it: slim is in. Easier said than done, though. Losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight are two hurdles that many people still struggle against. You might even be one of those who have either or both goals in your New Year’s resolutions. But how’s the battle of the bulge going so far?

You might’ve tried diet after diet and have been consistent in going to the gym. You might’ve tried everything, but still have a few pounds to spare. Why not try acupuncture for weight loss Frisco TX?

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional medical procedure or practice from China. Some people might mistakenly call it “New Age,” but it’s been around since 100 BC, probably earlier.

Acupuncture uses long thin needles to puncture the skin at specific points. These points usually lie along what traditional Chinese medicine calls “meridians.” Meridians are lines or pathways wherein the body’s “life force” or “qi/chi” circulates. Acupuncturists theorize that aches and pains are caused by a blockage of qi. Therefore, using needles to puncture the skin will relieve the said blockage and, in effect, relieve pain.

Emperors in China have used it to cure illnesses. Nowadays, people go to acupuncture clinics to treat anything from chronic back pain to depression.

But Does Acupuncture Work for Weight Loss?

It may. You’ll find many accounts of people who have tried it and found it to be an effective support for weight loss. To be fair, there’s no definitive research to back up claims that acupuncture works for weight loss. But a 2017 study found that acupuncture paired with lifestyle changes and dieting were effective for weight loss. The study involved more than 2,000 patients and 27 clinical trials.

In fact, most experience-based accounts you’ll find will be similar to the study’s findings. These are people who are already dieting and exercising, but still somehow not managing to lower or maintain their weight. Only after several acupuncture sessions did they see results.

How Can Acupuncture Work for Weight Loss?

Acupuncture doesn’t directly affect weight loss. Rather, it affects other circumstances that may lead to weight gain. Stress, for example, can lead to binge eating, which can of course lead to weight gain. Acupuncture can relieve stress, which can in turn affect weight loss.

This is the true philosophy of acupuncture. It shouldn’t be used as a standalone cure or treatment for any illness or disease. But it will be more effective if used in conjunction with conventional medicine.

In the instance of weight loss, Chinese Acupuncture, diet, and exercise will work wonders.

Another study used acupuncture with lifestyle modifications. They studied three groups of pre-diabetic patients. One group had lifestyle changes and acupuncture sessions. Another group had lifestyle modifications and daily intake of metformin. Metformin is a diabetic maintenance drug. The last group only had lifestyle changes. The results showed that those who had metformin or acupuncture lost more weight than those who had diet and exercise alone.

That study also showed that the group with acupuncture had better overall health. They had lower fasting blood sugar levels, total blood cholesterol levels, and hemoglobin A1C levels. These are health markers for diabetes.

Acupuncture can also improve digestion. Acupuncture techniques can improve blood flow to the stomach. They can also reduce bloating and calm irritable bowels. Better digestion and bowel movement can help weight loss, too.

So acupuncture alone might not have much effect on weight loss itself. But adding it to diet and exercise will make it more effective.

Acupuncture and Dieting

Acupuncture itself uses many methods in conjunction with needle-pricking. Other practices involve moxibustion. This is the use of burning moxa near the skin or directly on it. It can also be used with cupping techniques. This is a technique where gentle suction is used to promote better blood flow and healing.

One related practice acupuncture uses for weight loss is magnetism. Patients are sometimes given small magnets to wear on various points of the body, like the ears. They are told to squeeze the magnet every time they feel an urge to eat. Or, if they’re craving something outside of their normal daily meals.

It’s not all placebo effect, too. A study from Yale University found out the ears are linked to craving and addiction. They studied cocaine addicts for eight weeks. One group received acupuncture to specific ear points. These are points that Chinese medicine links to cravings and addiction. Another group had acupuncture in random ear points. The last group received acupuncture for relaxation only. The results were that the first group used cocaine less during the eight-week study. The other two groups’ cocaine cravings didn’t improve.

This just means that acupuncture isn’t a magic pill that will miraculously melt your belly fat overnight – or even in several nights. It’s a slow and steady process that will still require effort and discipline on your part. It’s more of a supportive push in the right direction.
